Reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) is widely used to estimate peptide purity. It separates components by hydrophobicity on a column with a water-organic mobile phase. Ultraviolet absorbance at 214 nm or 220 nm detects peptide bonds. The main peak area as a percentage of total peak area gives a purity figure. This figure depends on column, gradient, wavelength, and how peaks are integrated, so it is method-specific rather than absolute.
Mass spectrometry provides complementary information by measuring molecular mass. Electrospray ionization or matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization can confirm the expected peptide mass and reveal related impurities with different masses. It does not directly quantify all species because ionization efficiency varies. When coupled to liquid chromatography, LC-MS can assign masses to chromatographic peaks. This helps distinguish target peptide from truncation, oxidation, or deletion products. Mass accuracy and resolution determine how confidently a mass can be matched to a proposed structure.
Other methods address specific purity concerns. Amino acid analysis gives compositional data after hydrolysis, while capillary electrophoresis separates by charge-to-mass ratio. Karl Fischer titration measures residual water, and gas chromatography can detect residual solvents. Nuclear magnetic resonance can identify organic impurities but is less sensitive for trace levels. No single test covers all possible impurities, so purity testing usually combines orthogonal methods and reports the conditions used. The choice of methods is guided by the impurity classes of interest.
Reported purity values can differ between laboratories even for the same sample. Variations arise from column chemistry, mobile-phase composition, gradient slope, detection wavelength, injection load, and integration rules. Area percent also assumes that all species have similar response factors, which is not always true. Method validation examines specificity, linearity, accuracy, precision, limit of detection, and limit of quantitation. When comparing certificates, the method description and representative chromatogram are as important as the headline percentage.
Purity and potency are related but distinct concepts in peptide testing. Purity describes the proportion of the main peptide relative to other detected substances, while potency refers to the biological or functional activity of a defined amount. A highly pure peptide can still have low potency if it is misfolded, aggregated, or chemically modified at a critical residue. Conversely, a less pure preparation may retain high activity if the impurities are inactive. Clear reporting separates these attributes and states the assay used for each.

Today, scientific interest in snail and slug mucus has grown due to its potential biomedical and cosmetic applications. In the present day, slug slime is being studied for its antimicrobial properties and healing properties with research being done on drug delivery systems as well as cancer therapy. Scientific interest in snail and slug mucus has also grown in recent decades, particularly after glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), important compounds for skin health and repair, were first extracted from the African giant snail, Achatina fulica in 1996.
== Research == Pseudoephedrine has been studied in the treatment of snoring. However, data are inadequate to support this use. A study has found that pseudoephedrine can reduce milk production in breastfeeding women. This might have been due to suppression of prolactin secretion. Pseudoephedrine might be useful for lactation suppression.
=== Treatment === It has been suggested that chelation agents, such as British anti-Lewisite (dimercaprol), can be used to decontaminate humans. In one experiment, rats were given a fatal dose of 1.45 MBq/kg (8.7 ng/kg) of 210Po; all untreated rats were dead after 44 days, but 90% of the rats treated with the chelation agent HOEtTTC remained alive for five months.
Antiandrogens are medications that prevent the effects of androgens in the body. Androgens, such as testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT), are the major sex hormones in individuals with testes, and are responsible for the development and maintenance of masculine secondary sex characteristics, such as a deep voice, broad shoulders, and a masculine pattern of hair, muscle, and fat distribution. In addition, androgens stimulate sex drive and the frequency of spontaneous erections and are responsible for acne, body odor, and androgen-dependent scalp hair loss. Androgens also have functional antiestrogenic effects in the breasts and oppose estrogen-mediated breast development, even at low levels. Androgens act by binding to and activating the androgen receptor, their biological target in the body. Antiandrogens work by blocking androgens from binding to the androgen receptor and/or by inhibiting or suppressing the production of androgens. Antiandrogens that directly block the androgen receptor are known as androgen receptor antagonists or blockers, while antiandrogens that inhibit the enzymatic biosynthesis of androgens are known as androgen synthesis inhibitors and antiandrogens that suppress androgen production in the gonads are known as antigonadotropins. Estrogens and progestogens are antigonadotropins and hence are functional antiandrogens. The purpose of the use of antiandrogens in transgender women is to block or suppress residual testosterone that is not suppressed by estrogens alone.

=== Cancer === In a 2022 update of an earlier report, the United States Preventive Services Task Force recommended against the use of vitamin E supplements for the prevention of cardiovascular disease or cancer, concluding there was insufficient evidence to assess the balance of benefits and harms, yet also concluding with moderate certainty that there is no net benefit of supplementation. As for literature on different types of cancer, an inverse relationship between dietary vitamin E and kidney cancer and bladder cancer is seen in observational studies. A large clinical trial reported no difference in bladder cancer cases between treatment and placebo. An inverse relationship between dietary vitamin E and lung cancer was reported in observational studies, but a large clinical trial in male tobacco smokers reported no impact on lung cancer between treatment and placebo, and a trial which tracked people who chose to consume a vitamin E dietary supplement reported an increased risk of lung cancer for those consuming more than 215 mg/day. For prostate cancer, there are also conflicting results. A meta-analysis based on serum alpha-tocopherol content reported an inverse correlation in relative risk, but a second meta-analysis of observational studies reported no such relationship. A large clinical trial with male tobacco smokers and reported a 32% decrease in the incidence of prostate cancer, but the SELECT trial of selenium or vitamin E for prostate cancer enrolled men ages 55 or older and reported relative risk 17% higher for the vitamin group.

== Comparative information == All ACE inhibitors have similar antihypertensive efficacy when equivalent doses are administered. The main differences lie with captopril, the first ACE inhibitor. Captopril has a shorter duration of action and an increased incidence of adverse effects. It is also capable of passing through the blood–brain barrier. In a large clinical study, one of the agents in the ACE inhibitor class, ramipril (Altace), demonstrated an ability to reduce the mortality rates of patients with a myocardial infarction and to slow the subsequent development of heart failure. This finding was made after it was discovered that regular use of ramipril reduced mortality rates even in test subjects who did not have hypertension. Some believe ramipril's additional benefits may be shared by some or all drugs in the ACE-inhibitor class. However, ramipril currently remains the only ACE inhibitor for which such effects are actually evidence-based. A meta-analysis confirmed that ACE inhibitors are effective and certainly the first-line choice in hypertension treatment. This meta-analysis was based on 20 trials and a cohort of 158,998 patients, of whom 91% were hypertensive. ACE inhibitors were used as the active treatment in seven trials (n=76,615) and angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) in 13 trials (n=82,383). ACE inhibitors were associated with a statistically significant 10% mortality reduction: (HR 0.90; 95% CI, 0.84–0.97; P=0.004). In contrast, no significant mortality reduction was observed with ARB treatment (HR 0.99; 95% CI, 0.94–1.04; P=0.683).
An increase in the expression of Group 2 mGluRs, which could arise from a chronic under stimulation of these receptors, has been associated with schizophrenia. An increase in levels of system Xc- has also been found in postmortem schizophrenia patients, indicating that there may have been a decrease in net function of these receptors as well, leading to greater expression. It has been observed that Schizophrenia patients have a decreased level of glutathione in their prefrontal cortex, further supporting the conclusion that system Xc- may not be functioning properly. Clinical trials have shown therapeutic potential for N-acetylcysteine in treating schizophrenia. Again, changes in EAATs due to disruptions in Glutamate homeostasis may also be involved. Recent study showed that mRNA expression levels of both SLC3A2 and SLC7A11 in WBCs of schizophrenia patients are lower than that of healthy individuals. The finding supports the hypo-glutamatergic neurotransmission hypothesis in schizophrenia.
A table or chart of nuclides is a two-dimensional graph of isotopes of the chemical elements, in which one axis represents the number of neutrons (symbol N) and the other represents the number of protons (atomic number, symbol Z) in the atomic nucleus. Each point plotted on the graph thus represents a nuclide of a known or hypothetical element. This system of ordering nuclides can offer a greater insight into the characteristics of isotopes than the better-known periodic table, which shows only elements and not their isotopes. The chart of the nuclides is also known as the Segrè chart, after Italian physicist Emilio Segrè.

It usually refers to the relative area of the main peak in a chromatographic separation, such as RP-HPLC. It estimates the proportion of UV-absorbing material in that peak, not the absolute mass fraction of the target peptide. Different methods can give different percentages.
HPLC separates and quantifies components, while mass spectrometry identifies molecular masses. Together they can show whether a main peak has the expected mass and whether other peaks correspond to related peptide variants. This combination is more informative than either method alone.
Higher purity reduces the proportion of detectable related impurities, which can matter for research reproducibility. However, purity value alone does not establish identity, biological activity, or safety. The appropriate purity depends on the intended use and the sensitivity of the assay.
Purity percentages vary because each laboratory uses its own column, mobile phase, gradient, detection wavelength, and integration settings. A 95% value from one method may not equal 95% from another method. Comparative assessment requires the same validated procedure or an orthogonal cross-check.
